Its quite a sad state of affairs, seem to do it with electronics in particular.

I'm currently in exile in a place with no tax but things cost c20% more than in UK. It's mad but retailers get away with it because of "shipping costs" (they must send each item individually!) and the fact that residents have high disposable income.

It's disgusting the UK consumer is taken for such a ride when you consider any person living outside the EU could walk into a Dixons, buy the D850, claim back the 20% VAT then leave the country.

To be fair its been like this for decades and is generally better now than it was in the 90s (ime).
But then they have to pay the equivalent of VAT in their own county.  In essence it is a personal import.  You can do the same the other way - fly to USA or Hong Kong, buy a camera, claim back their sales tax and pay VAT (and in the case of a lens import duty) at the airport.

This does look an incredible camera if it has similar performance to the Sony A7R2 and definitely like the silent shutter as well.

The £3500 even for the UK seems ridiculous though and I thought you guys were joking when you quoted it, will see how grey import prices are.  I've been tempted by the A7R2 but didn't like the A7 body or the fact I'd need more lenses so being able to get its benefits in Nikon F-mount is a big plus.

Don't forget that includes our sales tax (VAT) at 20%. I could be wrong but I think each state in the US decide their own sales tax and so it isn't normally quoted in the price.

It's not, but even factoring that in you could get it shipped across paying all taxes and imports for hundreds cheaper apparently, according to the folk on TP anyway. I've not done the math myself

It will be 3799 EUR (incl. 19% VAT) in Germany - official statement from Nikon... which equals pretty exact the 3499 GBP (current EUR/GBP exchange value).

While this is correct and the pound is weak at the moment, converting to dollars and adding VAT still come to around £3200 which is a good bit short of £3500.
