Of course, my camera gets me the shots I want most of the time. However, sometimes it's a workaround and on odd occasions you do wish you had a feature that you don't.

Don't get me wrong, if I could never upgrade from my D750 I'm still happy and still able to get what I want 99% of the time.

But what we need and what we want are two different things

Correct, but sometimes life throws you a curve ball and things that really matter become apparent!

Not picking on you by the way.  However, the capabilities of the gear you have is more than enough to cover all bases.

In general I do think we just get gear because it's the latest thing and for no other reason, and I know because there was a time I did just that.  Great camera the d850...... It will be, but within 12 to 18 months the next thing will be the greatest latest must have!!!  Does that make the gear you have redundant or no longer up to the task in any situation?  Not really.

Like I said before.... Not trying to pick on you or out downer on this topic but I do think when these new camera's come out... There are a load of perfectly good body's with not a lot of shots taken for sale for all the wrong reasons!!

Just an observation

Sold my Canon 7D 2yrs ago in anticipation of getting the D810, few months of homework then the very first rumor of this D850 hit and I've held off ever since but now so excited it's finally a reality.

As a relative amateur to photography, to the pros and semi pros here, what 3 or 4 Nikkor lenses would you buy to go with the D850? (ignoring a budget)

The Nikon 24-70 f2.8, Nikon 70-200 f2.8 latest version or the Nikon 80-400 depending on whether you need a long lens, the 105 f1.4 and if you think you are going to do macro work the Sigma 150 f2.8.

My buddy bought a sigma 85 f1.4(the newer arty farty one), albeit on canon mount, nice portait lens is an understatement

Yeah no problem, and I totally get your observation and don't disagree. Also, I appreciate your point of view considering the bad hand you've been dealt health wise (I hope you're back on the mend by the way). On the flip side I lost both my parents at a young age and as a result it gave me the attitude if there's things that you want and you can afford them then just go for it, life's too short. Unfortunately in this case I can't afford it

The D750 is a truly great camera, however there are a few areas where I wished it could be better. I appreciate that these are totally first world problems and compared to cameras of the past it's just a case of being spoilt Just to prove how picky these 'issues' are and to give you a laugh, here's the list.

1) AF point spread. Sometimes shooting wildlife I can't get the composition that I want as you can't focus recompose when using AF-C
2) Frame rate. On very rare occasions the shot that I've wanted has been between frames
3) Higher resolution. Again only on odd occasions but would be handy for cropping when shooting wildlife and you can't get close, likewise for macro. The beauty with the D850 is that you can choose to shoot at lower MP for the rest of the time so that you can keep file size down.
4) Buffer. I do get limited by the buffer shooting sports.

Like I said, real first world problems Are these things worth the upgrade price? Probably not. Does it stop me wanting it? Nope

Depends on what you intend to shoot? The so called holy trinity are the 14-24mm f2.8, the 24-70mm f2.8 and the 70-200mm f2.8. Then get the new Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art lens ans your fast prime for portraits.

However, I have the 24-120mm f4 and in the meantime have had two 24-70mm f2.8's and then sold them again in favour of the 24-120mm f4. Why? The 24-120mm f4 is just as sharp as the 24-70mm and the flexibility of the 24-120mm outweighs the extra light gathering of the 24-70mm for me. If you're a pro and need a short zoom then the 24-70mm is the obvious choice though as AF speed is extremely fast (although the 24-120mm is no slouch) and it's built like a tank.

With regards to the 70-200mm, the new one is supposed to be the gold standard in terms of optics. However, imo Nikon dropped a clanger and the swapped the focus and zoom rings around so I would suggest to anyone that they try before they buy.

Stunning lens and raised the bar on 85mm's. That being said, I have the older Sigma 85mm f1.4 and it's a stunning lens too.

At $3,299 this is very keenly priced and will fly off shelves. Matching the price with the 5D mkIV is a nice shot at Canon - the d850 would shift at several hundred more
