There are reports out there that pre-orders will open in February.

This delay has made the decision much tougher. I don't want to buy both. I think I'm stil leaning toward the Vive on account of it (probably) being the better tech. But the better tech doesn't always 'win'.

Not sure if its been  posted up elsewhere  but Frontier released their minimum PC requirements for running Elite Dangerous in VR.

"The minimum (not recommended) specs demand at least an Intel Core i7-3770K or an AMD FX 4350 and 16GB of RAM. Again though, it’s the GPU recommendation that really makes us quake, as it’s demanding at least a GTX 980 with 4GB of RAM or better."

I really want to get into VR and im happy to spend the money to get one (albeit which one I haven't decided... tbh, it'll be the one with the best value bundle) im a bit gutted that the first thing id have to do is upgrade my current setups.

horizons is a complete killer on performance. even the vanilla game on my DK2 i felt my gtx 980 was getting a good work out.

add in the detailed planet surfaces
20% increase in resolution
20% increase in frame rate.

it does not surprise me to be honest.
gaming on a monitor if you get a few drops in frames it really does not matter, lose framerate in VR however and it can put you off the entire experience full stop, with nausea which can last hrs.  That being said i am still hoping frontier can support decoupled headlook.

i play FSX in VR with decoupled headlook and using my old i5, even when the framerate tanked to 45fps, it was still a comfortable experience as the headtracking was still a full 75fps.

VR for the next few years is only going to be for those with high end gear imo... it is a short term problem, 2 years from now it will be fine.

I really hope so, I was sold on getting one of these after about 10 seconds of playing Elite on it... Would hate to miss out because of high prices.

I had to fall back down to medium settings to hold 75fps from my GTX 970 in the DK2. I am not surprised I'll need a GPU upgrade for 90fps.

There was talk of SLI being an optimum solution, a graphics card per eye. I don't really know, sorry.

I've read loads about the Vive demos and people's experiences but this was the first video that I've seen (either because there haven't been any or I suck at googlin'). Really enjoyed it and its made the delay all the more frustrating.
