I've just managed to add some soundproofing carpet into the case like I do for the HTPC's I build, it's done the job luckily, before, it was almost like a small hairdryer with a metallic whining note to it! It doesn't compare to 15k scsi's spinning luckily!!!!

You go to Start then Run then type in telnet unraid. That will log you into your server. Then I think you type root.

Oh I see. You need to active Telnet. Goto Control Panel, add/remove programs, then click add remove windows components. Scroll through the list until you find Telnet Server and Telnet Client and click on them and them click ok.

Im now trying to preclear drives as per the tutorial. I only have 1 drive connected at the moment, if I connect them all can I start preclearing them all at the same time?

The preclear iisn't working so i assume im typing something in wrong.

./preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdc WDC_WD30EZRX-00MMMB0_WD-WCAWZ21450202

The drives are all WD 3TB green drives which I guessed were advanced format which is why I included the -A.

It's been a long time since I did preclears but I think you remove everything from WDC. You can preclear 6 hdd at once but I think this took slightly longer.

Was i right in thinking my drives are advanced format? Id rather preclear 6 at once but is there a way to identify and label each drive according to its drive bay? In whs i added each drive one at a time and called each drive bay 1 etc.

Im still slightly confused what i need to type to start the preclear. Is there a page to show how to preclear several at once?

preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sda   The letter at the end of sda identifies the hdd. eg
preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdb
preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdc
preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdd

type the below to list all hdds:

[email protected]:/boot#  preclear_disk.sh -l

Yes its advanced format drive and you should be doing the advanced preclear.

preclear_disk.sh - a new utility to burn-in and pre-clear disks for quick add

My server is finally finished, now containing 15 hard drives with data and one parity drive. Room for 5 more data drives but I'll wait 'til prices come down again.

Quite happy with the server so far now that everything is in place, including all my precious films.

However, I just can't get sleep/resume to work. The server sleeps, and it also wakes up but then can't be accessed and is totally unresponsive until rebooted. After looking though the unRAID support forums (Supermicro : aoc-saslp-mv8 breaks the sleep mode (update - when disks connected)) I found that my two controller cards (AOC-SASLP-MV8) seem to cause widespread problems or are even incompatible with sleep and resume.

Does any of you use the above card(s) and got sleep (S3) and resume working perfectly? Or do I have to dismiss the idea of sending the server to sleep to save some energy and get rid of the fan noise (8 fans in total) when not in use?

Any help would be very much appreciated,
Alex
