I found it in the Google Play store. I've installed it but can't get it to run. The screen just goes black and it hangs.

Mine asks me to connect my Echo.  some people on Reddit have been setting their app up with Google Calendar etc,  no idea how as I can't get past the setup device

Got on iOS searched Alexa.

A restart of my phone fixed my problems with the app. It doesn't ask me to connect my Echo because I already have a Fire TV which has Alexa built-in.

I have noticed that, although the app automatically sets up with my Amazon.co.uk account, requests to link a Spotify account go to Amazon.com. Is this right?

I can't get the Spotify link to work - every time I try it goes to a site called Layla.amazon.com/partner-authorization/establish and then nothing happens.

Ok so I have already hacked play store on it, but still.

Can you manage the Echo in a browser as well as via the app ?

Yes once you have it connected to wifi, it's all the app and the website ask me.
