The star of this series is--like the books--Los Angeles. Whatever you think of Welliver's portrayal of Connelly's Bosch, he's surrounded by a strong supporting cast whether they're villains or his fellow law enforcement (sometimes one in the same). I felt the series has strengthened as it's aged. The first season was too reminiscent of Robert Altman's smashing "The Long Goodbye," which was a worthy choice to imitate. But in season 2 & 3, things take off on their own, and even Welliver wins over those who already have a preconceived idea of what Bosch should be. The casting, in particular, of the female characters is exciting, keeping them on par with the strength and depth of their male counterparts, Amy Aquino and Madison Lintz being two examples.. This alone sets the series aside from the run of the mill and makes it worthy of the casual time the stories unwind, often 3 or 4 plots going on simultaneously. L.A. never looked so beautiful, in a very hard light.
