I'd suggest there is something seriously wrong with your system if you don't notice any real difference in performance between a SSD and a HDD.

My lappy has a 1TB HDD in it at the moment and it drives me nuts coz of how slow it is. I have a Samsung EVO 850 256GB SSD ready to be installed (just waiting for a caddy to arrive for the lappy HDD).

I appreciate a SSD is not absolutely essential I just couldn't contemplate not using one especially in a high end system like the build you suggested.

Also have to agree with ChuckMountain. A GTX 980Ti is a much better option unless you really need the extra performance of 2 Fury cards. Crossfire has issues that still need to be resolved. Even then the GTX 980Ti is an absolute beast of a GPU that can handle 4K on its own.

Oh laptop HDDS are definitely VERY slow
Crossfire (at least 2 and 3 way) actually has alot less issues than you might think
and yes a 980ti might be the way to go if your budget is strict

hello mate! haven't read the whole thread but have you considered going x99 instead of skylake? the 5830k is a solid choice and (imo) is a better option than the 6700k right now. You've also got the option of upgrading to a nicer 6 or 8 core in the coming years at prices that will no doubt be cheaper than their skylake equivalents, whenever they're released.

The spec you listed last is nigh on identical to my current one apart from the cpu/mobo (I went for matx x99 and a corsair air 240). Love the overclocking potential & extra cpu cores.

Please dont go with a 5930k, its a 5820k with extra lanes for if you are crazy enough to go quad sli

Anyone want to talk server builds? Mine is getting a little long in the tooth. I picked up a double width tower case 2nd hand the other day. I think I am going to do a new server build in it. My current server is a socket 1155 Core i3 build. I run it headless at the moment but can run an hdmi lead to it from my bedroom TV. I can see myself wanting to stream using steam from my main rig so I'm thinking I want a lower power discreet GPU so it can atleast keep up with a nice stream of encoded video.

So low power CPU and Mobo. RAID card. 18TBs worth of HDDs.

You could just move up to say a 3770 and use the onboard graphics
