Go for the Pi
I have most of my old consoles with a healthy selection of games but I prefer the simplicity of Raspberry Pi and emulation.

and here's me saying it's not USB doh!But you got what I meant, any way the Pi functions better with it.
I can't believe how rock hard some of these games are, Capcom's Commando, I recall from my youth throwing 10p's into this cabinet like they were going out of fashion.

Actually liking the look of this

8Bitdo FC30 Pro Wireless Controller for Android/iOS/PC/Mac: Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games

Seems to have a good classic style D-pad but also the analogs which will be useful with some of my ports and ScummVM stuff. Really tempted with an arcade stick as well though - would be perfect for the beat em up and shoot em ups

Yes, that looks like a better option than the standard SNES style, very tidy looking pad, best of both worlds to be honest.

Here is the power lead I went with if you wanted a 3 pin on the end: ModMyPi | Power Supply - UK Plug 5.1V 2.5A (Pi B /2/3) with Switch

Ta. Ordered this one as I want an all in one solution. Had a bit of trouble with Intellivision games wanting a keyboard input (havent got one yet) but couldnt go back to menu the normal way so had to pull the cable. And I dont like the idea of it being 'on' all the time either. Need a decent controller too because the cheap SNES copies I got with it aint up to much! 8bit ones are best?

Super Mario Kart SNES seemed really ropey now but the N64 version plays great.

I haven't even started on N64 or PSX yet. Tested more Mame and console games and most seem to work. My Mame library seems very hit and miss.
