Hinges on the definition of "basic" really. In ingredients Sushi/Sashimi can be pretty basic. Preparation is generally anything but!

EGGS!

My girlfriend is allergic to eggs and nuts and whilst I don't really miss nuts, I do miss eggs! I will have a jar of mayonnaise in the fridge, but I rarely buy eggs as I don't want to contaminate the cooking utensils. However, last weekend my girlfriend and I walked down to the local farm shop (got some lovely farm shops in the New Forest!) and bought some lovely warm fresh bread, sausages, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and a beautiful duck egg.

Delicious! Haven't had a good fried egg for ages! Girlfriend didn't mind as long as I cooked and washed up, but she was a bit curious as to how it tasted. Have you ever tried to describe how an egg tastes to someone?! I couldn't!
