I was thinking of converting all my house lighting circuits to 12 v leds running off a set of car or leisure batteries charged daily off my solar pv panels.  Will the 12 v led strips (5m 300smd strips available off ebay) run ok directly off a 12 v battery like this, or do they need some electronic power management circuitry?

The latest chip on board or COB led lighting is incredible just have new 12.5w sample at work next to 50w old mains voltage and 9w robus led it is in a different league and dimmable. Also looks like standard lamp not led output much better.

I found a GU10 7W 3000k led bulb by Bright Lightz (sold on Amazon.co.uk). It is a standard GU10 format, but there are 29 led elements mounted on the front plane of the bulb. This gives a very wide beam providing an overall light rather than a beam. They are probably a little bluer than the 3000k advertised but I didn't find that a problem. I just have to convince my wife that they aren't so bad as she thinks and that they will really save us money.

Great post I agree that LED lighting is the best way forward I know it can be a bit more expensive than standard lighting but there are far more advantages as you have said. The lower energy usage is the most appealing as lets face it we don't want to be putting all our hard earned money towards energy bills! LED lighting has recently come down in pricing and there are plenty of cheap reliable options out there!

In my experience, any LED replacement for a GU10 style halogen have been rubbish, don't produce anywhere near the light claimed and aren't that efficient.

We recently built a new house and have completely gone LED but dedicated LED lights from a company called ECO LED. Main bulb we have is called Zep 1 http://www.ecoledlight.co.uk/asps/resources/pdfs/493.pdf and they are brilliant.

I replaced all of my out door lights (on during the night) with LEDs and my electricity bill are almost 20% cheaper since then.

So, am I right in thinking that an LED driver provides a steadier voltage at the correct level compared to a 12V transformer and this correct voltage is better for the LED?  I saw in a thread in GC that someone recommended an LED driver for every LED.  I can't see me forking out for that!  By how much is the life reduced? 10% 50% more?


Currently I have replaced a quartet of 50W 12V halogens in the kitchen with these:
