HMRC are comically incompetent. They wrote to me about 6 months ago telling me that I owed them £1500. I wrote back telling them to do one, basically. Then a few weeks ago I received a cheque from them for £60 overpaid tax. Go figure.

One that amused me at HMRC was one of their senior managers who quit... and then came back the next Monday as an independent contractor doing virtually the same role???  For muchos tax advantages.  And this was in the height of the 'witch hunt' of IT Contractors and the whole IR35 mess.

"Do as we say, not as we do"

Mine was higher income child benefit charge, no way out of it and an honest mistake from my side.
I've always been paye but once you earn over £50k Inc company  car and bonus you have to declare earnings via self assessment. HMRC then tell you how much child benefit you owe them back.
I didn't know about this ruling as this is the honest truth, lots of parents at school are now worrying too.

What gets me is that if me and my Mrs were both on £49,999 they couldn't touch us but because my package is above £50k they sting me! My Mrs is only on £12k so how this that fair?
They even fined me penalties for not declaring via self assessment in the time frame.

One of the many vagaries of our over complex taxation system.

I thought the self assessment threshold was £100K?  Is it down to £50K now?
