Well if airlines forgo maintenance, safety checks, upgrades and fixes to aircraft then that airfare would be a lot cheaper. If you don't mind sacrificing safety for cheapness of course Airport fees I can understand, it's not cheap retaining firefighters on standby 24/7 for accidents and crashes, nor is it likely cheap keeping the tarmac in tip top condition for landings and take offs. Plus all the security you need at airports these days cost an arm and a leg. You can probably quibble about Government imposed taxes on air travel. As for coach travel across Europe ? It's what more people seem to be doing when it's easier to do so compared to the hassle of air travel.
You'll probably find air travel will get really cheap once short haul commercial electric aeroplanes become a reality, some airlines predict those will be around within 10 years. Fuel is expensive, electricity generated from renewables (and nuclear) is a lot cheaper. |
