I don't think it is baffling. I think it is because the NHS is this ridiculous sacred cow that can hardly be touched, and it would take a government with a five year term in front of them, plus a huge majority, plus the courage to make drastic changes, to change the current NHS into something manageable, accountable, and affordable.
I don't see any politicians around who offer any answers other than to throw more tax payers money at it. There has to be a better answer.
I don't pretend to have it, but I would start by charging for visits to the doctor or hospital, with a safety net in place for those who genuinely can't afford it. I think Ireland operates a scheme like that. Then there must surely be a way to incentivise people to take more personal responsibility, to take out insurance so that the NHS doesn't have to pay for everything. |
