Have I mentioned harm?  I said they looked ridiculous, and stand by that.  However it is a Muslim country, so more acceptable than covering your face here, where it isn't part of our culture.

Actually, that is a good article.
Agreed, he could have changed a few words as he knew they would be picked up as offensive. Considering his position as an MP it is normal to vet and double vet anything you say or write. Never say anything controversial!

But, what he says is pretty sound.
This head covering rule was of course made up by men... Women in Islam follow, they would have no say in Islamic rules in a country.

It is true, some women in the UK have decided they want to wear it, and have a choice because of our freedoms. But many in the UK, will have to follow because their husband says so.
Presently, our laws permit most kinds of dress, religious or otherwise.

I can't help but feel there are some double standards being applied here.

Firstly Cliff's post above criticises head covering as it was made up by men. That may or may not be correct - but these last few days the media has been full of men commenting on what women should wear!

Secondly it seems to me that the pressures on women regarding what they wear and how they dress are also present - just very different - in the West. Yes there are some important differences - full face veils limit interaction - but perhaps that is why so many males have strong opinions on them and perhaps why some women wear them.

It could be the days of 'if you've got it flaunt it' are going, replaced by 'if you've got it hide it'.

Very much like Victorian times when women dressed head to toe, including bonnets or hats with veils. Men were reduced to admiring ankles.
