It's a great idea.
Just have to fund the education system in this country better.
Private schools charity status has been a joke for a long time now.

So you would vote Labour because of that proposal?
You know full well that the funding for state school education will probably remain the same whether we have private schools or not. The two aren’t related.
But it will mean the state education system will need more funds because of the children who were in private schools will now be in the state sector.

It's a terrible idea. Where is the money coming from to fund these 600K of extra places that are needed? Education isn't funded sufficiently as it is.

Where will these extra 600K children go? Do you think the owners of these private schools will just let their buildings be used for free?

Pie in the sky. Like most of the crap coming from Labour at the moment.

We already have one of the best funded education systems in the world.

International school spending – how does the UK compare?                                                                                                        International school spending – how does the UK compare?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                www.nfer.ac.uk                                                                                When looking at The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) data, two key points stand out. Firstly, UK school spending is high in comparison to most other OECD countries and secondly, total spending in the UK is increasing at a faster rate. With a total expenditure of over $110,000 per student over the course of their schooling, the UK has the sixth highest expenditure of any OECD country. In contrast, New Zealand spends just over $80,000 per student, while the often citied high achieving country of Japan also spends under $100,000 per student.

I believe in Japan / New Zealand they don't start school until they're 6 - and they can leave at 15/16. Most countries start later than ours and leave earlier.

Here it's mostly 5-18. I wonder if that's taken into account. In fact I believe the UK has one of the longest, if not the longest, formal compulsory state schooling systems. So clearly if that's not taken into account then the figures will be off quite a bit.

I wonder if the free nursery funding is also included in the UK's figures? In which case the UK would be be ages 4-18....so potentially comparing 14 years of education to 9-11.

Good questions and I don't know.

But... Is it a bad thing if we fund free nursery? And fund college / 6th form?

Is more time for education a bad thing? Genuine question.

Regardless of the answer to that question, the issue raised was about funding. And per pupil, our spending is amongst the highest in the world.

No, they're all good things. But it would make our per child, per year spend considerably lower than that of the other countries as the data rather ambiguously is 'over the course of their schooling'.

Technically that data for the UK could include Scottish University funding too which would further mess up the figures.
