London’s murder rate continues upwards

Widely reported in the press today. There has been an exodus from London of 340,000 people.
Reasons stated, high house prices, local schools not good, gangs , knife crime, safety on the streets  and families not wanting their kids to grow up in this environment.
I think Noel Gallagher talked about life in London and how things are getting worse.
Let's see if our Mayor comments on this tonight.

This article suggests ridiculous property prices and Brexit uncertainty causing the majority.  Knife crime is a growing concern in most major cities across the UK.

“Londoners are leaving the capital in record numbers as property prices drive people to the south coast, official data shows. Figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today revealed that 340,498 residents quit London to live in other parts of the UK.

It marks the highest rate of people fleeing the capital since the ONS began collecting data in 2012. Experts have blamed the exodus from London on inflated house prices and violent crime rates.

Over the same period, just 237,270 people migrated into the city from elsewhere in the UK, meaning that the capital lost a net 103,228 individuals to other parts of the country.

The record figure only relates to 2018 and therefore does not account for the recent slump in the market, which is widely attributed to the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.  It also only tracks internal migration, and does not account for migration from sources outside the UK.

Christopher Snowdon, head of lifestyle economics at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) said that “property prices are a big deal” and the main cause of internal migration from London.

“Obviously people also want a better quality of life, but they also want access to good schools, to live in rural areas and to get away from the stabbings.” ”

It’s NOT just London.

The last stabbing in Bristol a day or so ago happened at my kids bus stop, so he was greeted with the Police doing forensics on the very large amount of blood on the floor, as he got off the bus for school in the morning.

The fatal stabbing last week by the 14 year old, the kid responsible is at his school.. rated “outstanding”

So while I understand there is a problem that needs addressing in London, it would be useful for the government to do more across all of the UK.

I’m not sure why you expect Khan to answer to what you posted, surely that’s for our Home  Secretary and why it took 13 months to allocate more cash?

I'm lucky to have been living here for 20-odd years (Islington). If I came to town now, there's no way I'd have been able to afford living here. Property prices are very clearly the reason most people are moving out - it's getting to a point that the people that work in the city just can't afford to live anywhere in it.

Crime is worse - but certain communities are hit worse than others. And the cutbacks in both policing and services has been a slow death of 1000 cuts. Local councils are also complicit in this, IMO. Police presence on the streets is clearly lower - but that's something we've seen over the past decade.

Could Khan be doing more? Maybe, and continued pressing on him to come up with and enact plans to address violence is obviously correct. But to lay the problem at solely his door when the government has been saying for years that police and service cuts - which were started by them - weren't an issue is selective blindness. If you are willing to ignore the government's complicity then you've clearly been egged on by a biased press and that ridiculous orange man.

And another Tory mayor? Good luck with that, Boris was an exception - it's extremely unlikely that'll happen again any time soon - particularly post-Brexit vote.

I have never said this is just a London problem. It is getting worse in many other parts of the country as well. The Home Secretary needs to address this.
However Khan is Mayor of London and he is most certainly part of the equation to tackle this problem in London.

Hopefully the additional funding and current recruitment will bring incidents down and knife removal numbers up, and make some improvements.

Khan on the radio at the moment. Some sort of debate on London (crime etc). Talks a good game but he’ll ultimately be judged on the numbers.

Likes to blame the far right for everything.  Inc terrorism.  Funny he doesn't mention the far left or Islamic nutters though.
