Good call on the pick there. I would add that if you feel the need to squeeze it to death, you know you definitely have too much pick showing.

With regard to string identification, I always refer to them as the high or low in relation to the sound they make, my low "E" being the 6th (thickest string) and my high "e" being the 1st (thinnest string). I also always refer to the strings by note and not number, for example: 1st finger, G string, 2nd fret.

I know it takes a little more thinking to begin with, but beginners start to subconsciously learn the notes they are playing, not just the chords which is extremely important further down the line.

As far as any musical instrument is concerned, there are only two truths....practice and passion.

bit more practice and the top E doesn't seem so bad now

got some Dunlop nylon picks now too....find them a lot better than the plastic ones I was using
...easier to keep a grip on too.

had a bit of a ureaka moment with speeding up some chord changes....in particular C and F maj 7 to....well anything really.

for ages my fingers have followed a rolling pattern with these chords....starting with my first finger going down first ...with fingers 2 and 3 following.....have been doing it that way since I first tried those chords without thinking too much into it...just thought it would speed up with practice

sitting down the other night I started thinking how could train my fingers to go down on 3 strings at once like every experienced player seems to do........suddenly dawned on me to put the middle finger down first !

once the middle finger goes down first fingers 1 and 3 seem follow straight away...has sped up things for me no end.

might be stating the obvious or it might be egg sucking time ....but might help other self teaching beginners !

got the beginners book....very nicely laid out and easy to follow

personally I do find some strumming patterns hard to get right just by looking at them written down.....usually find myself watching someone actually playing it on youtube to get the rhythm right

A lot of the time I find strumming patterns easier to feel than to count, easier said than done with some of them, but as with most things it's a case of slowing them right down and until you can play them perfectly and slowly speeding up.
