Today spurred on by Rob Chapman's new guitar tuition vids, I took a closer look at the minor pentatonic scale shapes.
I learned the first shape some weeks ago and I am quiet fluent, capable of cobbling together a bit of improvisation within that shape. I had been a bit daunted by the other four shapes, thinking it may add nothing apart from confusion.
To my surprise I found them rather easy to learn, I had them in the bag within an hour.
I'm now having fun in my new found freedom, linking the shapes together and working up and down the neck.
It's still very much work in progress but it seems to be another one of those light bulb moments for me.
Edit:
Adding to this I came across this clip which shows an extended version of the Am pentatonic scale (1min:30).
I'm loving this as a finger exercise and a link to go up and down the five scale shapes, so much so I drew it out and thought I would share. The yellow notes are within the scale so typically I go from open E right up to the A note at e20 and back, finishing with a run back up to the A note on E5. A proud and satisfying achievement at this stage of the game. |
