Recently ive been thinking about purchasing a small car for track use only , dont ewant to spend a fortune its just finding one i like for the money i can afford. So far ive wittled it down to the following , opinions please ;

honda civic lsi , esi or vti . the split tail gate one , small hatch . use to have one years ago , nippy , good handling and solid engine. loads of parts availble for them
honda prelude - hmm , something to thing about , just trying to find a manual . engine is 2.2 which makes the front a bit heavy
Ford Puma , cheap , nippy and easy to repair
Mitis FTO - just like the look , nice engine , strong and reliable , loads of parts about
Almera GTI - not sure , any thoughts
MX5 , cant really find one for the money i have but i like the idea

probably going to spend about £ 800 tops , then chuck some good money on tyres , brakes , suspension and service .

If you are after a civic then this is a bargain. It's a good bit more than the £800 but all the work you are planning & more has already been done.

Track Day Cars : honda civic ef 1.6 vtec track car

Was owned by a mate then he sold it onto his friend. The cage alone was nearly 2K and only installed last summer.

If any interest to you I can pass my mates details on so you can have a word & check out the history but it is a sound & very quick car

You can get a discount (10% I think?) from them as well, details are here:

Also consider e36 328i. That's where my money would go if looking for a track car. Should get one for a grand maybe cheaper. Put it on a diet and you have a good little car!

funilly enough i was looking at bmw track day thread build with some nice 328i and im a bit smitten to tell the truth, think i could have found the one ! But ive also been tempted recently with some lovely mk3 supras, but that brings a turbo and the issues/expense that comes along . plus finding one which isnt an auto is a pain.

Thats the beauty of older BMW's, built to last and would almost certailny cost less than the Supra to maintain. No matter how you look at it the BMW e36 makes one hell of a case for itself as a track car. I know of a guy on another forum who had a stripped out 328i and he openly said that it was quicker on track than his e36 M3 (unstripped)!

I read a thread on piston heads , some bloke basically bought a good condition 328i for less then a grand , spent maybe 3k on it , bought other 328 along the way stripped the parts he wanted then sold off. by the end he had a strip out racer with nearly 300bhp ( very little work on the engine , good service , good air filter and exhaust ) handled lovely and was road legal !
but a supra is cool ! problem isnt finding one , its finding one where the turbo isnt knackered and the body isnt rusted to hell.
I had been looking at old skool civic vti , split tail gate - i think the eg series. But they hold their value far too much. Just got to find a bmw now !

Sold on Ebay this week for £1350. Someone stole it at that money.

After nearly 10 years of running Imprezas on road & track, I purchased a tatty E36 M3 3 years ago. Spent a bit getting it track ready but luckly the chap who looked after my Subaru before builds & runs track day cars so it ws done over a winter at mates rates. Still, best not add up the bills but they do hold their value.

I didn't consider an 328 at the time as I got the M3 cheap but a few friends have them now and have made excellent track day cars out of them for resonable money as well

Got a trailer last summer and that makes it so much easier to drag to track days as driving long distance was a real pita, especially to the Ring. Roll on Oulton next month then I will be seeing where else I can get booked up at.
