I am pretty sure  that fully comp for me was just as cheap as third party when I took out my insurance
43 years old and 14 years no claims

Some very interesting and helpful points on here so I think you all.

The problem now is trying to get money together to replace my car.

She may have been old  but everything worked so ideally I would want another one of the same spec.

Won't get one like it with the money from the insurance
Can't afford the repairs to get her back to normal

But now’s your chance to buy something with a newer engine, thus better economy and better for the environment.

I don’t know your budget, but there are always bargains at every budget level. You just be savvy and do the legwork.

So my next question is then  where is the best place to get a used car bargain around the Essex area  Basildon, wickford  Rayleigh area?

Budget would probably be max 3k as I have family affecting  help me out, specifically my dad.

Bit off topic, but, even at 43 years old, tell your parents you love them!

Gumtree / Autotrader / Ebay are your first port all call. Pretty much every trader uses a combination of those.

Then use free tools like the Government MOT checker to check the history of any car you’re interested in.

Look at unpopular makes (eg. Daewoo, hyundai etc) as that factor makes good ones cheaper than Fords etc.
And if you know anyone friendly with a dealer, they may consider you for a car they've taken as trade-in and not prepared for sale or sent to auction.

Why not simply get another Focus for £400 The advantage is that it is such a common car there are plenty about. And I would widen the net if you can’t find it in your area. Just had a quick look on autotrader and there are loads, even with some low mileage if that is your thing.

Thanks again all

Any idea what happens if the value of the car is actually less than my excess?

Will i have to pay the insurance company some money and let them take the car?

Would i be better of just letting the scrap man take it ?

Its worth about 130 scrap.
