Great match and a not unexpected result. Even at 31 with his powers diminishing, he's still far to good for everyone outside the top 4 but, Federer's slide is now starting to become noticeable in the matches against the very best players like Murray and Djokovic.
A few years ago it would have been unthinkable for Fed to drop service games. Now he doesn't seem to be able to see out matches or hold his serve with any consistency against the top two. Whilst it was a close game on paper, the stats from the game tell the story.
He's still good enough at the moment to carry on but, I just hope that when the time comes for him to hang his racket up, he doesn't linger like an old warrior going out on his shield and end up being beaten by players not fit to tie his laces.
Would be great if he won Wimbledon once more and then called it a day, much like Sampras did after the US Open.
Murray looks good though. Could be a flip of a coin on the final. Both players play exactly the same way and it will come down to mental strength, durability, stamina and fitness.
I'll go for Djokovic in 5 due to his amazing energy, workrate, recovery and court coverage but, it could go either way I feel. |
