Well that's got that out of the way now Only played 9 holes as I went after work but it went better than I expected in some respects and a bit worse in others!

When I used to play many years ago I was usually quite good around the greens, chipping and putting used to be my strongest point. Last night my tee to edge of green was far better than it used to be but my touch hasn't come back yet around the green. It's understandable because I've not practised any of that stuff.

It was all 5s 6s and 7s for me but I had a birdie putt on a par 5 .... but then 3 putted

Onwards and upwards, I do feel like I'm going to enjoy this more now. Time to buy some clubs I reckon because at the moment I've borrowed a 3-wood and hybrid from my mate and I just have half a set of irons which cost me £6 each (ish) from Sports Direct

My problem has always been that I drop the club too much on the inside on the downswing which results in a flat, low trajectory and mostly a contact out of the toe of the club.

I have been for a lesson with one of the best coaches in the NW and his simple solution was to position my stand bag behind me, slightly on the inside. He then told me to miss the bag going back and then again on the downswing.

The result was a lovely little high fade, though I have lost some distance.

My problem is that I am fine when able to position the bag behind me but as soon as I play as normal I am back to old bad habits.

Today I am playing my first comp of the year and whilst I am sure it is against the rules to have any sort of aid whilst swinging, would it be against the rules to position the bag further back, just to give me something to concentrate on.

Even though I have played golf for over 30 years I have never been very good on rules

It did feel very strange yes but the memories came flooding back and I can't wait to get back out there again. I just realised I also got a 4 on one hole so it wasn't all 5,6,7 scores - I'll take anything as a motivation at the moment

Thanks.

Not a good day though. Managed to NR on the 17th and I don't think I would hsve broken 90, even though I felt I struck the ball pretty well for the last nine holes.

My short game was abysmal though.

Join the club mate It was my short game which let me down. As I think I've said before, when I used to play all those years ago my short game was my only strength!

Think positive, things can only get better

I don't think the conditions are helping either.

The greens are incredibly fast, which in itself is not a real problem. BUT because of the terrible weather over winter and early spring the condition of them is awful. There has been no growth on my course at all and it still resembles winter.

There is nothing worse than very fast, bobbly greens. Add in that all my chips are not getting close and I am missing everything. I even managed to three putt yesterday from about ten feet a couple of times

I had a really good session at the range tonight. I was striking the ball well and everything felt nice and smooth. Even the Pro said that I was actually doing the correct hip movements - and I wasn't even trying to do that
