I thought I was steadily getting better at the range and last Monday I was hitting the ball nice and clean. But the last 2 times I've been I was absolutely useless almost like I've never held a club in my life.

I might just have to admit that I'll never be any good at this as no sport ever comes natural to me. I'll give it another month and then pack in if I'm no better is what I'm currently thinking. I currently hate everything to do with golf, I really wish I didn't feel like this but I can't help but be down about it all

I wish I was the type of person with more confidence. My mate always expects to hit a good shot whereas I know I'm going to be crap and I think that makes a big difference.

How often do you play on a course versus the range? I use the range to work on stuff I'm not happy with, but try and forget all that when on the course. Confidence is a key, if you think you'll hit a bad shot, you invariably will, but there's nothing to say your next shot has to follow the same path. I go out on the course expecting to hit good shots but knowing they won't all be good, we're not pro's after all.

I haven't been on a course for 15 maybe 16 years now. I was hoping to get to a standard where I don't make myself look a complete tit before I went for a round.

I have to try and get myself in the right mindset and try to believe I can do it. It's not helped that the last couple of times I've been to the range it's been absolutely freezing with a cold wind blowing straight at you!

Ah, yes, I know what you mean, I had a long break from golf too. I'd say bite the bullet and enjoy your round of golf warts and all. Smile at the good shots and forget the bad, your first outing in 16 years will be a little shaky no matter what. You've probably benefited more than you think from your range sessions, so you won't be swinging blind.

Edit: And I hate any kind of range practise if its too cold, especially if you can't get your hands warm.

I've been going to the range regularly for a year or more now and getting no better in my opinion (although everyone says how much better my swing and posture and grip are).

I might try the range again tonight and try not to beat myself up every time I screw up!

Do you go to the range on your own or with a mate?

Do you practice with a purpose, drills to work on from a lesson or just bash balls?

I mostly go with a mate, but he's one of those annoying sorts who seems to be able to play any sport with ease!

Every time I go I try and remember what the pro told me in the last session. They have roll-up sessions at the range every Mon/Weds night and you pay an extra pound for the basket and get tips from the pro.

My main problem is that nothing seems natural to me at all and if I don't remember to do certain things (keep the swing wide, slow down the backswing, don't overdo the backswing) then I don't hit the ball very well. I have to concentrate on all the points and nothing has stuck so that it's a natural thing ..... if you see what I mean?

People keep saying that muscle memory will kick in and it will become natural but it hasn't so far for me. I probably have to admit that I'm a useless spaz and nothing I do will help
