Dark, smart, inventive look at the troubled psyche of Jeffrey Dahmer. The non-linear fashion in which Dahmer's life is presented shares structural parallels with Andrew Dominic's "Chopper". Like that film, this takes some key events from the character's life and shows how they twisted his perceptions. The film is filled with flashbacks and flashbacks within flashbacks, so there is a "present day" story involving a young, sexually repressed black man that anchors the narrative. Ultimately, the film becomes protracted to the point of frustration, but it is still a thoughtful approach to the hot subject. The scenes of Dahmer with his father, perfectly played by Bruce Davison, are incredibly uncomfortable, and one revelation, found inside a box, is a show-stopper.
