It is oh so easy to grasp the explanations underlying the bad reviews this outstanding piece of art has received, so feel free to pick one of them or combine: 1.You expect to see vivid shots of Dahmers cannibalism and necrophilia throughout the film, and when this fails to happen, you simple-mindedly dismiss altogether a great and atmospheric work. 2.You are 13 years old, and may be excused for not grasping at all the positive and dark monotony inherent throughout the film. 3.You are perhaps in your twenties, but still 13 in heart and soul. 4. You have not heard about the term; "poetic licence", and if you had, you would surely know that an artist may choose different approaches and angles as to how he would portray his subject(In this case focusing more on the person Dahmer), he has no obligation whatsoever to please the general crowd creating images solely for their pleasure. An artist has a PERSONAL vision which he wants to fulfill, but maybe he is dead wrong, and should ask you for advice the next time he is making a film? This was not to offend anyone, but if it managed to give you a wake up call, then nothing is better as far as I'm concerned. Well the plain facts about this film is that it is extremely well crafted: Notice the subtle use of music, the dark cinematography, the excellent acting by Jeremy Renner, the brilliant dialogues etc, etc. To little blood and guts you say? If David Jacobson had chosen to include more of this, the film certainly wouldn't have suffered from it, but as it stands now, left out elements like that, does not for one bit ruin an intense viewing experience. After all there is something called fantasy, and that means one is able to fill out the blanks. And providing you are familiar with old Jeffreys background(And I would definitely recommend checking out his story on beforehand), what can be more potent than that? This is not horror in the narrow sense, this is not meant to be a documentary, this is not Hollywood-garbage. It is simply somber and intelligent film-making. A rarity indeed!!
