rift s or vive in 2019
as per the title, have the money waiting but everywhere i turn someone or some site says the other is best! I can't afford mistakes so want to buy right. My pc is up to the task and i wear glasses too. Rift S every time, especially now that the tracking and display issues have been fixed.
The Rift S is cheaper, better controllers out of the box, has a higher resolution, virtually no SDE, is more comfortable to wear, has less god rays.
I can see no reason for anybody that's in their right mind to buy a Vive. For a complete all-in-one PC VR setup, you should only really be considering the Rift S and Index at this point depending on your budget. There's nothing wrong with the Vive, but it's at the end of its life cycle and you'd want the deluxe audio strap and Index controllers which makes it a far less appealing proposition.
Alternatively you can cobble together a Pimax or Vive Pro with Index controllers and base stations, but that's going to be a lot more expensive overall. I would suggest trying some out to see what works for you. Especially as you are a glasses wearer. The original Rift isn't glasses friendly and I don't think the RiftS is a great deal better. Actually it's A LOT better! It not only has eye relief but the face plate is also wider. I used to use prescription lens inserts with my original Rift but there's no need to get any for my Rift S because there's so much more room for them. It's one of my favourite things about the Rift S because having to get a new set of prescription lens inserts for my OG Rift every year was adding to the cost of the headset. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 Just going on a playtest I did with a couple of friends who are glasses wearers. The both preferred the Vive. No where within 40 miles of me can demo either data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 Index all the way.
No compromise tracking.
Wider FOV - 110 degrees v RiftS 95.
Higher Hz 120/144
Miles better audio
Better controllers - Hands free, full finger tracking and squeeze function.
Valve games are coming! Nowhere from where? I think it comes down to the Index or the Rift.
The Index is the more powerful of the two, but it’s also more than twice the price. If money were no object, and you were prepared to ride the initial wave of questionable quality control, then it would be a wonderful headset to own. I wouldn’t mind one given to me. I very nearly bought one, but bowed out before the final curtain as I couldn’t justify the price given the problems.
The Rift S, although the lesser of the two on paper, ticks quite a few more boxes for me personally. Firstly, and most importantly, it will leave more than five hundred quid still in your account. Secondly, you will have the Oculus library behind you. Despite what the Steam fans will tell you, Oculus are the only true investors when it comes to VR software. The quality is on Oculus, the quantity on Steam. And thirdly, setup is a breeze, thanks to the inside-out tracking. Very little spaghetti hanging out of the pc. The refresh rate is less impressive than the Index, but plenty good enough. The audio is lacking, but can be side-stepped with decent headphones.
Whichever way you go, vr is awesome. Maybe, depending on your location, you can bag a demo off one of the members on here? Most are a friendly bunch.
