Tethered can be wireless .(unless I am mistaken - and am sure I am not on this) all tethered means in this context is connected and so the wire is not necessary.

Oh ok, ideal. Definitely be good if it works - time for a new pc.

Tethered wirelessly has not been a simple process, even with the might of HTC / Intel behind it. Really doubt there is the millions of GHz receiver inside the Quest to enable a wireless tether to a PC. And the kit required PC side isn't trivial either.

If John Carmack is hopeful it will happen I would like to think it is at least feasible

Should get a release date (and maybe orders starting) Tuesday/Wednesday next week (at Facebook F8). £399 for 64GB, £499 for 128GB.

Really looking forward to this...

i think it will be fab. it is not a product i am interested in, not pokey enough but i think this should encourage vr adoption much more than oculus Go. I question if there is a market for go now to be honest.

in the future what i would love would be a teathered (wired or wireless) PC HMD but with compute on the device as well so that you can use it on the move as well...... i like the idea of playing some games with my entire garden as my boundary but i dont like that oculus cheaped out on the 835 APU.they should have at least gone for the 845 imo

Wireless PC tethered will be a reality eventually for sure. I am going to get the Quest but hoping they also have a subscription based service for apps. £30 for an experience is way too much to pay

There will ALWAYS be a market for a headset like the Go because that's the type of headset that will go mainstream. In 5-10 years we'll start to see sub-$100 headsets appearing in homes worldwide for mainly media use, particularly when we start to see major sports events and full length VR feature films broadcast in VR.

We're still quite a way away from seeing feature films in VR (I'd say 15-20 years) but it won't be too long before we regularly start to see sports events in VR, we've already seen it starting with the last World Cup and Basketball.
