Lol, I can't help it, I work in a physics department!
Me and my sister got our copies of Pokemon yesterday. She wanted X so I got Y. I'm really enjoying it so far, it very much follows the set up of the previous incarnations, but with a few changes.
The Exp Share has been improved which I like. Its now an item carried in your bag that you turn on or off, and it shares XP with all the Pokemonyou are carrying. By Pokemon not having to hold it you can give them other things.

My wife didn't start playing until late afternoon because she was concentrating on her Animal Crossing fishing tournament before then. But once she started playing Pokemon, I kept hearing "Awww, he's so CUTE" as she progressed through the game. She probably played more than me yesterday (we each have our own copies) and she's certainly progressed farther than me because I was concentrating on catching as many different ones as I could in the long grass.
Has anybody streetpassed with this game yet?How does it play out?Can you use streetpass coins at all?

The guy I sit next to at work (a self-confessed Pokemon nut) bought it on Saturday and completed it in about 20 hours.I'm about 10 hours in and so far only have one badge.

I'm nearly 11 hours in and only have one badge, don't see the point in rushing through. Trying to catch as many as I can and speaking to every person along the way as some give you items

What would make you buy X over Y, or vice versa? I have never played Pokémon before but I'm thinking this is my next game after Fire Emblem.

Doesn't really matter.Neither one has all the Pokemon in it - you have to trade with other players if you want to catch them all.But other than that, they're the same.

Just a preference as to which one you want to initially start with? Do you know what the least popular one is? Presumably that would be the best one to get to give a slight trading edge? I'd guess it's pretty even sales?

It starts the same. You get to pick from the same 3 at the start (leaf, fire or water) and then a bit later you get to pick from a different set of 3 of the same type (different from the first 3, but the same across X/Y).My wife is playing X and I'm playing Y.
