I agree they should not pull the statues down. They should use the correct legal process in place by local government to petition the removal.
Saying that. Removing these statues is not re-writing history.These men were always treasonous losers.There were when the war started and when the war ended and still are today. They were never figures to be admired unless you shared their politics and if you did, you were racist and by definition as un-American as it's possible to be.
Well if you want to remove un-american symbols due to their past actions then no better place to start than with the Democrat Party. They fought against the ending of slavery, ran outfits like the KKK (the only President that was a paid up member of the KKK was a Democrat and as recently as 2009 their leader in the Senate was 'Exalted Cyclops'.

Treason to the United States? They wanted independence from the United States. Scottish Nationalists want independence from the UK. We want independence from the EU. Many countries and states broke up like Yugoslavia, the Ottoman empire and the USSR. All treasonous?

Using violence and intimidation to force your views on everyone is something that humans do for good and bad, our history and even contemporary world is littered with examples.
From nations at war to enforcing laws, all exist on a scale of intimidation and violence.
HOWEVER
Quoting 1984 or repeatedly saying 'rewriting history' won't change the fact that is NOT involved in this issue.
Removing a statue is not rewriting history, it is merely removing a statue.
Also, the idea of rewriting history is only considered bad if it happens to be to hide or obfuscate the truth.
We often rewrite our understanding of history to update and correct errors or include new information to make it more accurate.
The only people who tend to have issues with that are those with ideological world views detached from facts and evidence - like Fascists, religious zealots and true believers.
