Aren't we saying the same thing ?
The point is the 'marriage' seems to have been appropriated by the church as unique between man and woman.
If it is indeed, purely a religious ceremony outside of the lawful contract then its up to the churches to decide if they want to change their rules.
In a registry office, a man and woman get married and it says so on our certificate. I can't remember if God ever comes up ? If it doesn't, then its not a religious ceremony and simply a contract, in which case its only an ignorant law that needs changing, but that shouldn't apply to a church unless they want to comply. They can rightly claim not to uphold that marriage is desirable between same sexes and accept the consequences of that decision.
It does seem to be stirring up the same old grumblings from the homophobes. They are entitled to their opinion, but should not be taken into account in a matter of contractual law as it is used within the context of marriage. If it is clearly not a religious ceremony then civil partnerships are marriages.

Marriage is declining but here we are talking about gay marriage
A ploy to boost the numbers or in years to come will people be debating which is the better gay or straight marriage as there will be comparisions made

Interesting how many are not married. We lived together for several years before deciding to get officially hitched. It was becoming a pain filling forms in that seemed not to include living together. Its probably changed a lot now, but 20 years ago it wasn't quite as acceptable as it seems to be these days. In fact, despite living together for seven years her mother banned us to separate bedrooms when we visited as she was a staunch Catholic. After the ceremony we were actively encouraged to sleep together, by that time I had grown used to 'my room' and 'my single bed' and refused to change.

I really am at a loss to understand what exactly the gays want this time. Seems to me they've got 'rights' in Britain far in advance of 99% of other countries.

Probably "the gays" want to have the same marriage status as "the straights"

.????? Don't understand what point you are trying to make.
If religious people, who happen to be gay, would like to show an agreed commitment to each other, in front of their God, their sexuality has nothing to do with it IMO

Err.. only problem with the above is that all religions say homosexuality is not allowed. And that's before we even talk about marriage!

Except how do you get around the Bibles verse in Leviticus
ESV: (English Standard Version): "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them."
Pretty harsh these Christians. Marriage is a teeny problem compared with being put to death.
