Where LibDem benefitted is that they were the only party with a clear Remain stance that stood, and therefore, the majority of Remain supporters would have voted for them.
Conservative is split between remain and leave as are labour.I suspect that pretty much all of their remain supporters switched to LibDem.
What was left of Conservative and Labour was probably mostly leave - off course there will always be the “I always vote Conservative/Labour whatever brigade” - but I suspect the bulk were leavers.
So the leave vote was split across Conservative, Labour and The Brexit Party and although the sum is bigger it hands over victory to the LibDems.
Interesting that Greens didn’t stand.Maybe they didn’t think they had enough support or a candidate that was interested, but it could be that they had an agreement with LibDem because they would have split the remain vote and probably handed over victory to the Conservatives.
Anyway, good victory to the LibDems, they played it well.If we do have a GE anytime soon I can see some really weird politics developing.

"Following today's news that the writ for the Brecon and Radnor by election has been issued, Wales Green Party leader Anthony Slaughter said, ' The local Green Party in Brecon and Radnor has chosen not to contest the upcoming by-election, in order to maximise the chances of the candidate most likely to beat the Conservatives and the Brexit Party. Our local Green Party, like some other parties, has decided in these very particular circumstances that the best choice right now is to put Wales before tribal politics. We will always stand up for environmental and social justice, but current government policies, including the threat of crashing out of the EU, are bad news for people and environment."

Even as a Leaver I have to concede that the Remain parties have shown much more tactical nouse than the Leave parties.
I guess one issue Leave has is that most of its supporters are in the big two that (a) are used to winning elections on their own and (b) are not clearcut remain or leave but a mixture.
But no doubt, The Brexit Party prevented a Conservative win - those that voted TBP party will be waking up this morning to find that they voted to remain in the EU.

They appear to be seeing the UK leave the EU, and the associated risks to jobs/investment in the region, as a more pressing concern then independence.Would be nice if some other Parties did the same.

It's clear that the BXP will only accept a very very narrow definition of Brexit. One that they will never get a majority in both parliament or the public.
They make the chance of Brexit less likely now.
I think it's interesting too how few (so far) have really picked up on how utterly atrocious a night that was for Labour. They are finished unless they binbag Corbyn.
Finishing 4th with that pitiful number of votes at a by-election where there's a crooked Tory running. Unheard of.
Nobody knows what Labour stand for.Every Labour minister I've seen on the news has said different things and Corbyn never does interviews so no idea what he thinks.
