Last night there was a triple stabbing in East Barnet. We all go about our normal daily routines and think that it doesn’t happen on my doorstep. When you see the TV reports at the locations of these stabbing, neighbours always say they have never seen this before ‘around here’. So things are changing. You might think your own area is safe, and then, something like this happens and you realise you have been lucky. I am probably as guilty as you, thinking that it never happens on my patch and continue to walk the streets at night.
As for asking me the causes, I am no expert, but I am looking at the results. I want someone, ie the mayor to fix it. It is his job is to keep us safe.

I faced more crime in the three years I was in Oxford than the subsequent last fourteen years I've lived in London.

It’s not that I decline to answer- you make sound like I know the reasons but I don’t want to say! Maybe you know more than me? Obviously much is drug related but not all. I know children are bringing knives into school for self defence. Some schools are looking at security checks on entry. Many youths carry knives when they go out, just in case they are attacked.
The police, when doing a stop and search, do recover knives. There used to be Post Code gangs. It has been said that some youths without fathers regain a sense of belonging when they are part of a gang. It is becoming part of life in a city.
I hope our mayor is much informed of the causes than we are, and he actually does something to reduce the epidemic.

I think anyone pointing a finger at the Mayor or even the Met in London are slightly out of touch with the complexities of policing IMO, and appear unaware this is not just a London issue.
You mention it's not only a drug issue, but this type of violence is spreading from drug gang violence and has now been common place for other areas of crime.
Take a look at Bristol as it's increasing here also:
Violent crime reaches record levels in Bristol area
-------------------
Violent crime has rocketed in Bristol and the South West to its highest ever level - with 116 attacks recorded each day.
Avon and Somerset police reported 42,450 cases of violence against a person in 2018 - the highest number since records began in 2007.
Serious crimes involving knives or other sharp objects is also at its highest level since 2011.
Violence against a person assaults recorded in 2018 is up 3% compared to 2017, and has almost doubled compared to 2007.
This figure includes 15 killings.

Again Bristol:

Five people have been arrested, including two boys aged just 15

And looking at Manchester:
Knife crime hits highest level in almost a decade
------------
Knife crime has hit its highest level in nearly a decade, official figures reveal.
Almost 21,500 offences of possessing or making threats with blades or offensive weapons resulted in a conviction or caution in England and Wales last year.
In Greater Manchester there were 1,016 knife crimes - the highest level since 2011 and the third largest figures behind London and the West Midlands.
In Cheshire, police recorded 424 offences - the highest level in more than a decade and almost twice as many as 2014.
According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Justice one in five of the offenders were children, under 18.

It's probably no different than many cities, but we had an attempted break in, damage to property, and my own mobile was stolen (and it was only a crappy Sony Ericsson). Not a spot of bother where I am now in nw London.

When are the elections for the London Mayor?
For Londons sake, hopefully Khan get the boot.
Quite clear he’s very much out of his depth.

I hope to see a good candidate running against him. Last time his opponent was Zak Goldsmith who I had issues with (LHR). Let’s hope we get someone who really wants the job and is a doer.
