As car man says turbo hose. My Focus (same 1.8 tdci) had the same problem and I replaced it with an aftermarket silicone house.

Are we talking about the pressure hose from the turbo ? , I know when it split on my qashqai , all I had was loss of power and limp home mode , no smoke .....

Delvey Publish time 24-11-2019 23:50:31

Maybe. Common problem on the Focus and it does cause smoke. Not enough air gets into the combustion chamber so basically runs rich and the diesel doesn't combust correctly

Time will tell , be a damm site cheaper if it is just a hose !!!

Well, as you guys rightly diagnosed, it was a split in the turbo pipe! Got that sorted, and they replaced the glow plugs as well as a couple of them were shafted. The mechanic said that one of them had shorted such that they needed to replace a melted wire as well. Got it all done for just over £300 so pretty happy with that. Thanks for your help guys!

The only other (rather worrrying) thing he said was that I'm also going to need to have the belts replaced. Apparently this particular model (1.8 tdci) has 2 belts, and Ford recommend they're replaced after 100k. We've done 88k but the mechanic said he's seen them go at 85k and once they've gone, the car is pretty much nackered.

Any thoughts on this? He said that it's a real pain to replace them, so they charge £725 inc parts & labour. Does that sound reasonable to you guys? It seems a bit data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 to me so just wanted to make sure he's not trying to pull a fast one!

He's having you on i have the same engine, when my water pump went i had new belts, pump and tensioner for £300. Although that was at mates rates i wouldn't expect to pay more than about £400 they are a doddle to work on

Blimey, really? Is it possible that there are different belts with my particular 2008 model? I've heard that some of them have belts and chains, whereas I think the 2008 model has just belts. He reckoned that these are really tricky to change. Is your CMax a 2008 too?

Rigsby Jones Publish time 24-11-2019 23:50:32

No it'sa 2007 focus but exactly the same.I think even a main dealer would beat your quote. Just shop around

Rigsby Jones Publish time 24-11-2019 23:50:32

Check euro car parts a water pump is £35 and timing belt kit is around £40 - £50 add about 2 hours labour. Oh and your engine doesn't have any chains

I've got 2 belts I think? Cam belt and timing belt?
