Whatever the case I think a visit to the Ford dealership is in order to establish what should be serviced, and the cost. If indy's are charging £700for this no doubt Ford will charge more and that seems absolutely scandalous on a service item.

Edit: I think if the OP registers here he can see maintenance schedules for himself: FordEtis home page

(Should even let you see if you have a chain or not)

Edit 2: More info here: Wet belt and timing belt 1.8 TDCI

A very interesting topic, id love to know what Ford say if you do ring them up, please report back!

Also you could buy the bits yourself (Dayco are OEM I believe) and save some cash that way: FORD FOCUS 1.8 DIESEL TDCI TIMING BELT KIT AND LOWER WET BELT KIT AND GASKETS

We bought the car with about 80k on it, so I wouldn't mind betting that's why we got it for a reasonable price (about £4k iirc). Will give Ford a stab at it just for shiz and giggles, and will report back.

Unfortunately they do need changing with the cam belt and bumps the price right up (as you've probably found). Don't know if they did the 'wet chain' on the focus but could be worth checking if yours definitely does have the 'wet belt' and not the 'wet chain'. Was lucky with my mondeo in that it had a 'wet chain' which, I was advised, didn't need changing. Just changed the main cam belt.

If you look at my earlier posts I posted lots of info about the wet belt.
