Same thing they are , you will have a timing belt and an auxiliary belt

steviebwoy Publish time 24-11-2019 23:50:33

Oh okay, and if they both need changing is £725 justified?

paulyoung666 Publish time 24-11-2019 23:50:33

Uh no .....

Ah. What would be a rough guess?

paulyoung666 Publish time 24-11-2019 23:50:34

I would for around £250-300 but I am a bit out of touch for prices ....

Just had a look at our "Health Check", the mechanic has written:
"Timing belt replacement recommended 75,000 miles/ 5 yrs = £725 inc".

It sounds to me as though this guy is trying to put the frighteners on us. That seems like a heck of a bill for a timing belt replacement, unless I'm missing something specific to our make and model (CMax 2008, 1.8tdci). We've done just over 88k, so we're obviously past the 75k the mechanic has suggested.

Does anyone know anything further on this please? data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

This engine has a belt for driving the cam and a chain for driving the injection pump.
Replacing the belt is a fairly straightforward job which should not be expensive, however the timing chain should be replaced around 100,000 if I recall correctly.
Replacing the timing chain on this engine can get expensive...the price quoted for replacing the chain and belt doesn't sound out of order, but please check with them if they have quoted for belt and chain replacement...oh, and yes, replacing the chain is a real pain of a job...I seem to remember there are 2 types, one with a chain.
Edit.. There is a belt that is in a cassette unit which is supplied with oil....These are not easy to replace.

According to the mechanic, there's no chain with this model of CMax. It's strictly a belt system, so he says - specifically, he says there's an upper and lower timing belt along with an auxiliary belt. That's all he's offering to switch out for us, for the princely sum of £725. I just need to know whether that's a good deal or not really.. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

One thing you need to know is that this "wet belt system" is a real pain to replace...expensive parts and lots of labour.
I have a friend in South Wales who had this job done on his Mondeo 1.8 tdci...he paid £650 3 years ago.
If they are replacing the "wet belt" kit and the upper timing belt with the aux belt then I'm not surprised at the cost.
I will ask someone at my local Ford garage tomorrow...my son works for Ford, but hasn't done one of these jobs before.

Thank you, I'm going to have a quick ring around today so would be massively grateful if you did manage to have a word?
