At the risk of tempting fate, I have never back ended anyone, but I've been back ended twice by people not paying attention to where they were going in a 30mph urban environment.

A Mazda. You can switch it off for each trip or in the settings. We're still trying to get our heads around it.
The manual is 1.5 inches thick, I assumed 1/5th of it would be in English - but it all is!

That must be so annoying, the auto braking at slow speeds. Our Mercedes-AMG GLS was bad enough with the stop/start system at slow speed that regardless of how light I was on the brakes it would always cut out; so it stop/starts god knows how many times. But if I then had braking interventions as well I'd be ready to get out and just leave it where it is data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
To me these two are simply examples of good aids but badly implemented. There is no need for either to behave like that. But a bit like with mobile phones until Apple shook up the scene, car manufactures are lazy when it comes to implementing updates or improvements.

Given the last time was more than ten years ago, I'm guessing no data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

I suspect that was a setup but still makes an important point - the first was head on, the second as if someone was coming around a curve.

I found this video of my car very persuasive (watch from 2.23).
We can be confident, competent drivers, but none of us are infallible.

No it isn't banned for being "too good", it is banned as it takes away the need for some skill that the drivers possess (or at least, should do). The idea is to force the driver to perform, rather than rely on technology.
With regards to road vehicles and the ability of the system to react faster than a human can - of course it can react faster, there is no debate about that. The point is, should the driver pay attention to what they are doing and drive according to conditions and situations a faster reaction shouldn't be needed and this is the whole point - its a system designed to allow the driver to be lazy and slapdash, I see no issue with drivers having to pay attention to what they are doing.. or is that too much to ask these days ?

IMBW is correct about the cause, you are stating the effect.
