So you extrapolate someone using cruse control/auto braking to them going 'nah' when a child runs out a split second in front of them?

Crafty, perfectly good logical reasons have been used in the posts above.

A good driver like crafty will avoid that situation always. There is no need for any help, hence there are no reductions in insurance premiums, nor road traffic accidents. Just forget all this safety bollocks.
Oh wait a minute, we aren’t all as good as crafty is data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

That happened to my Golf this winter. Warning flashed on the dash to say the system was inactive. The radar is under the front VW badge, cleared the crap of it and the system reactivated.

I think that this type of system should become the norm in cars, vans, lorries, coaches very soon, but it shouldn't have to be retro-fitted by law - it just wouldn't be economic or feasible to achieve.
So to answer Stuart's original question "should all road vehicles have autonomous emergency braking" then I answer no, but I think it should be part of any new 4 (or more) wheel vehicle. Not sure if the technology could be applied to motorbikes...

I bet you are not a day under 40, probably 50 to have a quote like that
And if your reaction time is not quick enough to stop you, you are either going too quick or too close to the car in front

Exactly and sh*t happens, sometimes you anticipate and leave a gap yet someone only decides to go when you are much nearer. I’m sorry that I’m not a perfect driver like you, I could be wrong but I’m quite confident there are a fair few of us imperfect drivers about. What would you prefer, me driving into the back of you when you make a move I unfortunately didn’t anticipate that time, or have a back stop that intervenes at the last possible moment?
Surely you wouldn’t prefer me crashing into you?
Ps. Touch wood, but in all my years of experience and more importantly the way above average mileage, I’ve never ever had an accident yet. However I realise it could happen one day and think it is good to remove the risk even further.

No need to go in a tantrum

That wasn't a tantrum.
