Dont over think it.
Roof bars, sorted.   Ive had roof bars on for a decade.    Same bars on 3rd car.    Never leave.

Keeps bikes out the car, means you can fit in a parking space at a food shop etc.

Get thule, the stuff lasts forever. Its worth the slightly more premium over own brand halfords etc.   Aero bars not square ones.      And you can add a roof box, or ski rack, or kayak holder etc . .its great.   Footpacks if you change car although citroen and mazda happen to have the same profile data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Also wouldn't hesitate 2nd hand thule bars. They dont really degrade so no issues.

Then, get those 4 quid plastic buckets from asda, for laundry, throw dirty kit in it, they are completely waterproof and keep the trail mud inside them.
