It’d be an awful shame if he lost the bike.....

Seriously? Mine fitted in the boot of a Saab 93 convertible like that, and I could still put the roof down. Actually did the same in an Audi A4 convertible as well. I'd be very surprised, does he have an oversized frame with both front and rear suspension?

Using roof bars and a bike rack? How would he lose the bike?

Yep, the boot is huge but the opening is quite small (it is a saloon). I forget the size of the bike but I'm 6'3" and it fits me. It is a hardtail.

I had a Mazda 3 in Cyprus, I'm still surprised. On a hard tail it should fit easily. Quick release front wheel, back wheel, seat, and drop steering. I'd be surprised if it didn't fit.
Give it a try instead of measuring data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Depends whether his bike has quick release gear fitted. Most MBs have it on the front, and it’s sometimes on the back too - it can easily be retro-fitted to either wheel if it doesn’t currently have it.
Then the front wheel will come off in just a couple of seconds, and the rear a few more seconds. Depending on his brake setup, putting them back can take just a few seconds, or maybe, with a tricky one, might take a minute - but no longer!
Equally, I wouldn’t worry too much about roof bars, loads of people around here seem to carry their bikes on the roof - so it must be viable. And we’ve carried boats/dinghies on the roof of various of our cars with no ill effects - sometimes travelling with them on to the continent from up here in Northumberland - and have never had a major issue.
