Agreed with above. Doesn’t take me much more than a minute or two to do. Less than strapping it onto a carrier or on the roof.
The downside of putting it in the car is after he's ridden it, more than likely wet and muddy etc.

Whether you have genuine or not towbar the critical bit for reversing sensors that the trailer sets off, is a reed switch on the electrical socket cover. That switch can be wired in to signal to the sensor that a trailer is fitted and turn the sensors off.
How easy or DIY the connection is depends on the make and model and what the wiring loom has already.
My Captiva had the stuff fitted so the sensors we’re turned off with warning light when the cover was lifted. Skoda Superb (series 2) did nothing and (all round) sensors gave alarm at the rear whenever reverse selected with trailer connected. Not sure on my new series 3 as am yet to fit a trailer. Hopefully will do something as it now has all round sensors that turn on going forwards at low speeds too.Also has rear radar for blind spots and cross traffic etc so a trailer may stuff those features up I suppose.

As I've said, it isn't a hatchback.
Fastback (saloon) so boot is big but the opening is tiny.
Not that I am recommending them, but I bought the cheapest ever seen cycle clamps for roof racks in France many years ago and they've never let me down, from carrying 2 very heavy downhill rigs to lightweight x-country bikes.
I always strap the bike down to the roof bars after clamping the downtubes and tie down the wheels as well.
