The biggest issue is the lens lineup, it’s really bad, probably worse than the Sony e-mount when that first got up and running. It’s a shame as I was looking at this series but they don’t have a single lens that I’d want

That’s the good thing about already owing Canon lenses. Although its not ideal at least you can move sideways from another Canon crop camera without a huge outlay on lenses.

I guess really as I'm only a hobby photographer I'm wondering if the 80D would be overkill for me and I like the sound of the M50 for it's price   have a few lenses already and am more than happy to try a new format.

It looks as though it has the main settings I only use currently and use.

The 80D is a very capable camera .I dont think its overkill for anyone. It gives you the ability to learn and grow with it, without finding too many restrictions. It has many features that may seem insignificant now, but you may well miss them if stepping down to the M50.

I would second that lens availability is, ironically, an issue for Canon with it's mirrorless bodies. The native lens are limited, and even though you can use an adapter easily to mount EF/EF-S lens you could be using any body at that point - i.e. it's no more an advantage of the Canon mirrorless than, for example, Sony mirrorless as you will need an adapter either way.

Having said that, Mrs Thumpermawer uses a Canon mirrorless for hobbyist photography and is a very satisfied customer.

Having used my EF/S lenses with an adapter on my old A6000 id say its definitely not the same thing as using a M body in this respect. AF was painfully slow, to the point where MF was much faster.

All companies will cripple their lower end cameras, it’s classic business if you ask me and not just canon
At least it has 4K, and before you say no one will use it, that’s what people said about the 5D4, and people are now just getting in with it.

4k is amazing for video, especially useful. It allows you to crop to heaven and back, create movements in videos and turn bad footage into amazing footage.

The fact canon didn't put it into the 80d was a travesty.

The M50 has no solid lens lineup and no PDAF in 4k. Honestly, it makes it very hard to sell.

I'd rather grab a panasonic G7 at that price which has a healthy lens ecosystem.

I totally disagree with you about the 80D, and this just shows we want and expect different things.
Not everyone wants 4k, or even video. I dont know anyone personally that uses a DSLR for video, including myself. Adding 4K is not a cheap option, there is heat dispersion etc to worry about. This will bump the price up and take the camera to a price point higher than necessary for those that have no need for 4k.

Pro's wont be looking to buy this camera to replace anything, and they dont often use AF anyway (or zooming).

The fact that you can use any Canon lens on the M series of camera's means they have a very large lens line up. The M series seem to be selling well, and while i agree the native lens line up is rubbish, the fact that any Canon owner already has lenses that will work is a big plus in my book.

when i get my M50 i have no intention of getting any of the EF-M lenses, i have every focal length covered already, with much higher quality glass.

The G7, G5 etc are much better cameras for 4K video, but that doesn't make them better cameras for stills.
