I'm going to wait for feedback about the tracking before I get one but if I can fire a bow and arrow without much of a problem in Skyrim and other games (which should be helped by the two cameras on the sides) then I'll probably be getting one.

The two things I'm most disappointed about is the lack of built-in headphones and the lack of the nose gap. The LCD displays won't be much of a problem because the black levels of the Oculus Go displays are pretty good and I should get used to it pretty quick when playing the likes of Elite Dangerous.

The only other headset to compete with the Rift S is the HP Reverb for me personally. Both headsets are a great deal cheaper than the Vive Pro and Pimax 5K  but the Rift S, despite having a lower resolution, is the least attractive out of the two because the Rift S will have superior tracking even BEFORE Oculus sort out being able to use OG Rift sensors with the Rift S.

At $399/£399 it's looking like a good buy as long as the tracking out of the box works okay, and the hands-on reports I've seen are pretty positive so far. I'm expecting Facebook to announce that they're going to add Constellation tracking as an option at F8 anyway so I'm not too worried about the tracking tbh.

i am interested in the possibility of supporting constellation. sadly i DO have  a big head so there is that
but 1 positive which i only just considered.....

up until a week ago i had pretty much given up on a new rift this year and was thinking it could easily be mid - end 2020 before we get a new hmd.
now. .... CV1 is no more, and riftS over all IS i think most will agree better than CV1 for most people... maybe just not for me.

but now the rift S is out of the way, maybe a rift 2 will STILL come next year.... in which case tbh i am not in much different a situation than i was a week ago, its just that rift S may be an extra if you like.   i think it is fair to say riftS is not aimed at anyone who posts in this thread.

vivers aint gonna get it, i doubt many rifters will unless it is a warranty swap out for a defective rift or a forced purchase due to out of warranty rift.

so really not that much has changed for me

The main problems I had with the Vive Pro are the ridiculous price that they have it selling for and, most importantly, HTC using the exact same lenses in the Vive...forcing people to mod their headsets with GearVR lenses. If I was to spend over a grand on a new shiny VR headset I do NOT expect to have to take the thing apart and perform surgery on it to make it any good lol

Now I DID have a bit of Nerd Rage when the rumours of the Rift S using inside-out tracking started but I soon calmed down and decided to wait until we got more info on it. It still remains to be seen whether you can fire a bow and arrow with the thing without the tracking getting lost but the cameras they've added from the side SHOULD help with that, and as Nate Mitchell said in his interview with Norm from Tested they haven't ruled out the Rift S also being able to use the Rift's sensors to improve 360 degree tracking anyway.

And I don't think the Rift 2 will come out next year, that won't be coming until 2022 imo. That would make a headset being released every 3 years. We MIGHT see HTC releasing another headset in 2020 though because that would make a headset being released every 2 years.

I agree with all you said Mike.

My excitement was genuine. I thought once we saw Cosmos, then the new HP WMR HMD Oculus would better them. But as it turns out Rift S is worse. This leaves the door open to Samsung to to pop out a 2k zero SDE OLED all singling all dancing Odyssey 2 later this year or early next.

The truth is Oculus have concealed to HTC and Cosmos which is now second choice after Pimax 5k /8k.

Do people really think I’ll have a fat smug smile on my face next time I put my 5k  on? You decide. Karma is a bitch.

yeah now i have digested it a bit and had a brew..... i think for me this is almost not a new headset but a streamlined replacent of the rift. its similar price, similar spec - plusses in some places negatives in others..... almost more like a ps4 and a ps4 slim, rather than a ps4 and a ps4pro.

Doesn't seem like an upgrade to me.

Probably just a mid-term rejig that keeps costs down, both for them and the consumer. Not sure a Rift owner would benefit from upgrading.

Whether a true successor appears remains to be seen.

But the big question is - if not, why not? And what message is Facebook sending out to PC VR developers and consumers?

i wonder why they used Go screen and not quest screens?

oculus said they want 3 product lines, i hope in the future they do not replace the go and the quest takes that slack and they introduce a high spec rift as well as the rift S.

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing someone on Reddit saying that Carmack wanted to use BOE's fast-switch LCDs in the Quest but time wouldn't allow it. Something like that anyway. I was expecting the Quest to use fast-switch LCDs too and was quite surprised by it not having them.
