Got my server up and running tonight, so no immediate issues.  Reseating cables and hard drives fixed the issue...but I'm still considering changing the system.

The Dom is like a usb that contains the software. It plugs into a nine pin usb header on the motherboard. The problem with the synology servers is that they don’t have hdmi and therefore no video output. I am not too sure if the ds1010 has a removable Dom but some servers can bypass the internal software. That’s why I chose the qnap.

@HugoFJH - how is your system running now?  Did you establish your running costs savings?

Just conscious I have a full fat system, 4 x drive caddys, 19 hard drives.....

Also, what's your useable space?

I must have changed my system multiple times over the years since have been too and fro from Unraid 2 or 3 times since then (including XPEpenology/ diskstation on bare metal )

Currently have about 640 full BR quality and 100 4k movies. waiting for GoT to come out fully on 4k but otherwise only 2 seasons of Westworld in way of tv.

Exactly why I went with the above , the server in all its guises worked reasonably well but was too damned loud and in the way (no suitable cupboard to put it in, so was in my little home office).
Never needed a direct hdmi output, always played rips over the network. Recently changed my tv to an LG OLED, and video player is pretty good but I do find it doesn't recognise some audio tracks now and again but generally its pretty good. Do need to find a better solution next year when cash allows but good enough for me

Got a boiler issue to resolve 1st (which has meant I haven't been able to work out cost saving) but just getting near silence again is worth every penny!!!

ive just swapped from a HP Microserver to building my own

Its built in a Fractal Design node 804 case - have an 8 core Ryzen CPU - 32gb ram, and 4 x 3tb WD Reds - 500gb NVME SSD for cache, and a couple of old SSDs for other stuff.

You can put upto 10 disks in the case, and its smaller than the average tower (its a cube)

What controller card are you going to use for the drives?

i bought a Dell H310 Perc from the great auction site, flashed it to something called IT mode, which lets unraid see JBOD, and its all good - i have the 4x3TBs on this controller, and then the SSD on the motherboard controller, and the NVME and another SSD on the M.2 slots on the motherboard

I've got an LSI 8 port card on its way from HK that is preflashed to IT mode coming. I've been messing around with an UnRaid install the last week to see what I think of it. Initially I found it quite frustrating after being so used to Windows. I think I am going to stick with it though. So once the card arrives I will create a proper array and set it all up from scratch again. I then need to think about organising some automated sync with a VPS I have. That poses a fun challenge

The big down side for me with Freenas is that you can’t expand a vdev once created. So if i’ve 4 x 4TB drives in a RAIDZ vdev, i can’t add a 5th 4TB when i need to expand. I’d have to buy at least 3 x 4TB to run another RAIDZ, then add that vdev to the existing pool. Which means i’d always have to have some ports free for larger hard drives and then migrate date.
