40TB+ unraid server options?

Had to come in after seeing Smurfin's name, have very fond memories of the original Unraid thread from back in the day (if I remember correctly the makemkv / ripping one as well).

I have recently moved away from my massive 12 drive unraid server to a 5 bay Synology with 12tb Ironwolf disks and yes admittedly this doesn't allow for re-usage of the 3 & 4tb drives I already had, but imo from ease of use and the savings on the electric bill its worth it.

Obviously you can get larger number of bays - but I didn't think this was worth it, I chose a device which accepts a reasonably cheap expansion module via esata once Ive filled up this and that should be fine for me.

It works perfectly for 4k media aswell so all good, and about 1/8th of the physical size occupied to boot!!!

Given that I had a full tower case, 900w psu, full fat i5 and motherboard with multiple sata cards, and 9 *4tb disks (hmm might have even had 11 disks installed at the end) and going to a Synology 1019  with 3*12tb enterprise disks, I cant see how the power usage will go up

With things like this I ignore the power savings when Im making a decision and its a nice monthly / quarterly bonus if or when it does happen.

A DIY server is great learning experience, and real feat of accomplishment when built and running, but once you are at capacity its a real ballache to swap one disk out for a larger one multiple times over.

The bonus was that the new setup was up and running after one weekend (with 20  tb copied over the network , about 700 full quality BR's and 60ish 4k BR's)

Still have to do a little bit more housework in Plex (listing all 007 films together in order and other series) but otherwise working well.

I use a 6 bay qnap server but I removed the dom and replaced it with a usb header containing my unraid software. Works great!

That's still 2k for me to change!  

Just lost one of my caddy's, not sure if it's the sata expansion card or the caddy itself, but 3 drives have dropped from my array   This is becoming a real pain....

FreeNAS? It uses ZFS like unRAID?

No faff with RAID controllers. Easily upgradeable. Thinking about building one to use as ESXi storage.

It’s going cost you no matter which way you go. You could buy some used 12tb seagate ironwolf/archive drives for about £200 each on eBay. Then build a new server and transfer data from one to the other.

What's a dom?  And how easy was this to do?  I may have an opportunity to buy an old DS1010  and a DX510 expansion unit (so 8 bays in total - with unraid I could reuse my 6TB disks and add 10 or 12TB disks).  Really want a smaller, quieter, non-obtrusive server now
