Apparently I broke some rules here, sorry. I need to visit here more often and get the feeling.
Still, as I bought Xperia Z tablet today I still don't know how to mirror picture to my bravia, anyone?

Bought a 55" 853 from Sony outlet as a refurb. Good price and excellent picture on bright scenes, but very bad white clouding on dark scenes which no settings tweaking would remove.

Its being returned so I need to sort a replacement quick, so would appreciate advice - is it worth trying to find another 853 and hope the screen is better or do I spend a lot extra and go for W9?

I had a 55EX713 before and had no bad screen issues at all.

So far this has only occurred when watching Freeview HD channels...it does not seem to happen with Freeview SD broadcasts.

The problem I am getting is that the picture blanks randomly for around half a  second or so before coming back again. It can happen two or three times in quick succession and then not again for ten minutes or even an hour. No disturbance to the sound whatsoever.

My first thought was that it might be a broadcast issue, since I'd only seen it happen when viewing Freeview HD channels. However, I've discounted this as I've noticed that if I have the programme info on screen at the same time as watching the programme, this also disappears only for them to both return at the same time.

So my second thought was that it could be an LED backlighting problem. However, I'm not even sure about that now. I've discovered that if I am recording an affected programme via the tv's USB recording function, when I play it back, the picture blanks occur in exactly the same places as when the programme was actually broadcast!

As a final check, I dual-recorded a programme using the tv's USB recording function and my Humax HDR and watched the programme whilst it was being broadcast. Both the tv and the Humax were set to BBC TWO HD.

The picture blanks which happened whilst watching the broadcast were also apparent on the recording made via the tv's USB recording function - this was pretty much as I'd expected from my earlier observations. However, on the Humax recording there were no picture breaks at all. So this definitely rules out it being a broadcast issue and seems to confirm it is a problem with my tv.

One final thing. I first noticed this problem a few days after the set performed its most recent software update. So I'm now wondering if that has introduced this issue?

Has anybody else come across this problem? And if so, do you have a solution please? All responses gratefully received. Thanks.

iiyama: is it a 1080i/p switching issue? Go to where the screen blanks on the humax and press the i(nfo) button. You will be able to see whether the broadcast is interlaced or progressive. See if it changes from one to the other.

The output of the humax is either i or p, whichever you have set it to. The output will not change automatically. Hence, when an in-programme switch occurs, the tv will not see that switch if the content is coming from the humax. But it will see that switch using the internal tuner and, presumably, a USB recording.

Picked up a 46" from Sony refurb store but PQ isn't as good as I expected. Seems to be brighter in bottom right corner too, may return it and stick with Panasonic plasma's.

I'll mess around with settings after then.
Do you know if I connect a Sony home cinema system and use game mode for it as I will have a PS3 connected to the cinema system. If I play a blu ray, will the TV automatically change to a mode that has 24p enabled?
It auto does it with my Panny GT30 and BTT590 you see. I wouldn't want to change scene selections every time I watch a movie due to juddering without 24p in game mode.
