Actually, I don't think that originally they were going to make it a "is he or isn't he" type thing (as far as Michael being dead).  From what I remember from the book, Michael was alive and he actually wakes Stephanie up from a daydream or something backstage.  So I think when they decided on this storyline, they didn't take into consideration that he was suppose to play the piano.

Also, if you look closely on the DVD, during the luau scene (while they are still singing), you can see Michael sitting on the edge of the pool eating cotton candy.
