This sounds like a great little product for a second system. For those who neither want nor need more than stereo. It's nice to see some of the input flexibility from AVRs appearing, but with two decent channels of amplification, rather than five or more mediocre ones.

It does have bass management and channel delays, although the twin sub outputs are mono. Great looking little product that I suspect will find its way into my second house along with a pair of spare SVS bookshelves and sub.

They couldn't have timed it better!

However unlike most AV receivers it looks like Marantz might have come up with one that reproduces two-channel music well

I think you may be missing the point.

1200 is marketed at people who want great stereo and the ability to use their amp for two channel hdmi stuff. Amongst several other groups.

There are many people who thoroughly enjoy films and filmesqe tv series. And gamers too.

But they do not want five or seven speakers. 2.1 is therefore exactly what they’ll be looking for.

Stereo speakers, and a properly balanced sub will be exactly what they need.

A single hub for everything able to output a full range signal for music and use the .1 of film soundtracks.

So even those for whom music is the top priority will still be able to get a well balanced sound from around 20Hz up.

The NR1200 won’t be of interest to anyone intent on a 7.2.2 home cinema.

But it’s not aimed at them.

It’s aimed at a quite large and diverse bunch of potential buyers.

And quite apart from not being expensive it’s a bargain. £600 for all it sports makes the 1200 one of hifi’s better bets.

Not to hi-jack this thread, but does any high-end manufacturer still make 2-channel receivers; I started out with an Armstrong 625 about fifty years ago and still have a soft spot for them. Thanks

Receiver in the traditional sense; integrated amp with a radio tuner built in?

I think you're looking at it. FM is dead from a marketing point of view, so DAB is what you will find at best and internet radio is killing that other than in the portable/car market.

This looks great for a 2 channel amp with built in streamer, HDMI etc, bass management, a really nice bit of kit.

I do love marantz slimline products, and I’m sure this will sell well.

Adam.
