Is that using google drive?

No if you go into your settings there is a section on Samsung for back up. With Samsung you have two choices of cloud with Samsung itself or Google. Click Google and sign if required and back up what you want. It does use up Google drive space but if you are backing up apps, contacts and messages it will hardly take up space.

Backing up media and photos will obviously take up more space. I just transferred that via USB 'drag and drop'

Is there any way to reduce the size of the icons on EMUI?

I think there is a setting you can alter but I'm not sure if it reduces the size of the icon

I found one that reduces the size of menus and text but nothing for app icons.

There isn't a setting for that, no.

Install a different launcher. There's nothing particularly special about the standard Huawei one.

Didn't realise i had bought Nova previously so install that and its looking much better. Cheers

Any idea how I get it so I can read messages directly from the lock screen. I thought it was setup correctly as there is an option to hide content so would of thought display would mean displaying the content.

Night mode is pretty amazing on this thing. Went to a show the other night so thought I would test it out as that's a situation where your only option is a phone or compact camera. No way I could be getting my tripod out!

I did one in auto mode and then one in the night mode.
