There is no currently available PC-exclusive racing game that is directly comparable to the experience offered by Forza or Gran Turismo.
The console ports are the best bet for the that. Anything by Codemasters like GRID, DIRT or F1. I have F1 2012 on the PC and it's a good game. The handling model is a bit basic and very forgiving but the game looks really good and has all the authenticity of the real championship.
You could always check out RaceRoom Racing Experience by Simbin and Auto Club Revolution, both are free to play online racers.
rFactor is at the opposite end of the scale to Forza. There is no career mode, no credits to earn. The user interface is very basic. It's all about realistic racing either offline (single race or championships) or online. The game relies heavily on community created mod content which means there are hundreds of tracks and cars to download (of varying quality) but it also means the game has an enthusiasts element which requires a lot of tinkering. rFactor isn't pick-up-and-play. Having said that, it does offer all the driving assists you need so the driving difficulty can be scaled to any ability level.
I play rFactor 2 which is still in beta but should go 'gold' sometime this year. Worth checking out if you want to see how good driving physics can be.
To start with I would recommend Race Injection by Simbin:
Race Injection (PC DVD): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games
Also look for GTR Evolution (both are on Steam). These will give you a shed load of content and tracks, and a sim that's very immersive but not too hardcore. It's an older game so will run well on any modern PC, but it's still widely played today. |
