That 1 DS would be a pretty sweat return of the gameboy.

Great price but it looks rubbish and it's too big. Never had a problem with broken hinges but can see the appeal for kids. More battery power would be good too.

I guess they're having to compete with tablets and phones but this just seems desperate rushing it out so quick after the 3DS launch. Could also be an admission by Nintendo that the original 3D effect was always just a gimmick.

Just a heads-up to anyone who hasn't seen it, Blockbuster are doing new 3DS consoles - although you need to 'click and collect', you can't have them delivered to your door - for £99.97

The very last thing Nintendo need is more confusion with their model range. We now have the 3DS, which the commonly held belief amongst the public was that it was just a DS in terms of power with added 3D, that struggled and has now taken off, so they launch a 2DS, which is a 3DS without the 3D (but more powerful than the old DS/DSi) and can play 3DS games, but not in 3D - er... OK. Imagine your average Game employee explaining that one to confused parent/grandparent.

There's absolutely no confusion with the new 2DS imo - it's simply aimed at the younger generation 7yrs and under and launches on the day the new Pokeman games launch.  It does sound confusing the way you describe in your very long sentence

The thing is, it's far cheaper than the 3DS, it will arrive into a massive games library and the old worry of 'the 3D affect will ruin my child's eyes' (which has never been proven) will be eliminated to appease those that are convinced that the 3D effect is a health hazzard.

As to the look of the 2DS, it's a matter of personal taste - it comes in two colours to represent Pokeman colours.

... it's not massively cheaper than the 3DS though. 3DS consoles are routinely around the £119 mark, and sometimes as low as £99, whereas the RRP of the 2DS is £109 although you can pick them up around £95.

Also, how many parents genuinely worried about the 3D effect, which could be turned off and locked by parental controls anyway?

Most parents I've come across who buy games consoles for their kids do so to keep them occupied and aren't particularly bothered about any adverse health effects.

Sorry, I actually meant the 3DS XL

Some parents are worried about the 3D effecting the eyes but the 2DS eliminates all that concern.  My mate who works in Game has said that many parents ask about prolonged usage of the 3DS when it comes to kids but I do agree with you that some parents don't give two hooks when it comes to their kid's health.

I think it's a good move by Nintendo especially given that Pokeman are coming to 3DS very soon and variety is no bad thing - kids will love it.
